There's a Moth in our Midst

Insects have fascinated me since 5th grade. We were assigned to do some bug collecting. Label them with the proper name and include the scientific name of five of them. I must say my partner and I had a fabulous A+ bug collection. My favorite insect since then has been the sphinx moth. They are a rather large moth and sometimes get mistaken for hummingbirds. I saw one on the sidewalk the other day and got really excited. I don't see them very often and when I do, I consider it a special treat. I took some pictures with my phone, but since it's not smart (and I don't have the proper cord) I can't upload the actual one I took, but here's a link to a replacement!

To Boldy Go

Little did I know how prophetic my last post would be, or maybe ironic is a better word. "To boldly go" was a lesson I needed to learn, or rather, take comfort in in the past two weeks.
Two verses come to mind that confirm those thoughts.
"Now go, I will help you speak and teach you what to say." Exodus 4:12
"When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted." Psalm 138: 3
On whatever frontier I attempt, I must boldly go.

The Final Frontier Revisited

The "Final Frontier" seems a fitting title for my last post and subsequent overly long hiatus from writing.

How about now we go with "Another Frontier: to Boldly Go"?

The Final Frontier

To boldly go where no man has gone before...yes, this is the motto of Star Trek, but I think it every time it snows. When a fresh layer of snow blankets the ground and then I take a step in it, I've stepped where no man has stepped before. It's quite a thrill!

I hope someday to say that I've gone where no one has gone before in greater things, but every winter I look forward to the thrill of going/stepping where no one has gone before.

Enjoy the snow, for I'm sure we are to get lots in the coming days! and have a Merry Christmas!

No Slug weighs a Slug, bats with a Slugger, fires a Slug, Slugs someone, takes a Slug, but may act like a sluggard

I think slugs are cool! I'm used to seeing little inch-size slugs, but seeing slugs that are around 3-4 long is one of the coolest things! The other day as I was walking between classes, I happened to spot one of those larger slugs and couldn't resist picking it up and carrying with me as a pet for a few blocks. I even felt it's radula.
Some slug species play an important ecosystem role by eating dead leaves and fungus, and decaying vegetable material, also relevant to my PhD.
Some slugs are predators of earthworms...gasp... that's one trophic level up from my dive for the next few years.

And a lovely poem by Isaac Watts.

The Sluggard

'Tis the voice of the sluggard;
I heard him complain,
"You have waked me too soon, I must slumber again."
As the door on its hinges, so he on his bed,
Turns his sides and his shoulders and his heavy head."
A little more sleep, and a little more slumber;"
Thus he wastes half his days, and his hours without number,
And when he gets up, he sits folding his hands,
Or walks about sauntering, or trifling he stands.
I pass'd by his garden, and saw the wild brier,
The thorn and the thistle grow broader and higher;
The clothes that hang on him are turning to rags;
And his money still wastes till he starves or he begs.
I made him a visit, still hoping to find
That he took better care for improving his mind:
He told me his dreams, talked of eating and drinking;
But scarce reads his Bible, and never loves thinking.
Said I then to my heart,
"Here's a lesson for me,"
This man's but a picture of what I might be:
But thanks to my friends for their care in my breeding,
Who taught me betimes to love working and reading.'

Lassenight

A couple weeks ago my family and I headed to some ground we've never previously walked: Lassen Volcanic National Park. The scenery was splendid, the hikes were exhilarating, the weather was fantastic, and the company was exceptional. Enjoy some of the photos!
